a magical place in the Mediterranean

The Natural Park will find the towns of Cabo de Gata, its fascinating beaches and coves, views and landscapes of the most interesting areas of the Natural Park, environmental information and history of the area.

The fauna and flora of the park include a large group of particularly interesting species due to being endemic or geographically restricted to nearby areas, threatened with extinction, essential to the normal development of ecosystems or to be a significant economic resource.

The ecological importance of Cabo de Gata is at its source, volcanic nature, semi-arid climate, maritime-terrestrial character. The Most Important Habitats: Mediterranean steppe, dune formations, Salinas, coastal cliffs and sea fanerogam meadows. From the terrestrial fauna of Cabo de Gata we can classify it into two different biotopes: grassland and stephed area.

The Volcanic Complex of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park was formed in the period between 15 And 16 millions of years, and is the emerging part of a large submerged magmatic area that extends across the Alborán Sea area.

Geographical location and climatic characteristics mean that marine species normally populated on either side of the virtual border of sea currents between Cape Gata and North Africa coexist in the protected maritime strip, without such a circumstance anywhere else on the planet.

The vegetable catalogue consists of more than 1.000 terrestrial species and up to 250 Marine, including some of the utmost ecological importance, such as Posidonia oceanica.

The Flora of Cabo de Gata-Níjar is characterized by the sub-arid climate with high medium humidity and high evaporation and solar explosion, and with low-fixation soils and volcanic relief.

When it comes to wildlife, the park has an impressive diversity of terrestrial and marine invertebrates. Among the first are more than twenty endemisms and between the second, the vast majority of taxonomic groups described are represented.

Marine fauna is a predominant factor. We'll distinguish three different biotopes:

  1. sandy bottoms
  2. rock bottoms
  3. ocean posidónia meadows.

Birds in the Natural Park are also a characteristic factor, and we can distinguish three environments: The pasture or marsh area, the orchard area and the step-by-step zone.
